Karachi Blast in Karsaz area at Morning

KARACHI: At least three people were killed and eight others wounded on Thursday after a bomb hit a Pakistan Navy bus in the Karsaz area of the restive southern port city of Karachi, in the third such attack this week.

The blast took place near the Maritime Museum Karachi, which is located on Shahra-e-Faisal, one of the main transport thoroughfares of the city.

10:05 am

Express 24/7 correspondent Shaheryar Mirza reports that most of the injured are in stable condition.

Bomb attacks hit two buses carrying Pakistani navy officials in Karachi Tuesday, killing four people in the latest sign of rampant insecurity in a nation key to US hopes of winning its fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Nearly 60 people were wounded in Tuesday’s attack when remote-controlled bombs exploded beside the buses at rush hour in different parts of Pakistan’s politically tense economic capital, used by Nato to ship supplies to troops in Afghanistan.

Karachi is home to Pakistan’s stock exchange and a lifeline for a depressed economy wilting under inflation and stagnating foreign investment.

But the city of 16 million is plagued by ethnic and sectarian killings, crime and kidnappings.

It is scored with rivalries between the Urdu-speaking majority and an influx of Pashtuns from the northwest, and outbreaks of political violence in Karachi killed more than 150 people last year.

PTCL 50MB Broadband via VDSL2 Bonding technology

PTCL has become the first industry in the world who launches 50MB Broadband using VDSL2 Bonding technology. PTCL says that this high speed network in Pakistan will be first commercial use of VDSL2 technology in the telecom industry globally. PTCL said that it will be using VDSL2 Bonding technology to provide existing digital subscriber line (DSL) customers with speeds up to 50 Mbps.“PTCL is the first service provider worldwide to deploy a commercial VDSL2 Bonding solution that aims at doubling the bandwidths provided to its existing customers.
During the conference, while commenting on this achievement Walid Irshaid – President and CEO PTCL stated

“PTCL is the first service provider worldwide to deploy a commercial VDSL2 Bonding solution that aims at doubling the bandwidths provided to its existing customers.

We are thus setting the trend in international telecoms, and are taking the broadband experience in Pakistan to the next level. Alcatel-Lucent’s VDSL2 Bonding technology and comprehensive services and network integration expertise is helping us to keep pace with the increasing bandwidth requirements of our customers, while capitalizing on the existing copper infrastructure. This will enable us to quickly deliver high-quality, high-speed and high-availability business and residential services – even in areas where it was not possible before.”

Alcatel-Lucent is providing PTCL with its Intelligent Services Access Manager (ISAM) IP access platform – which is the first platform to commercially support VDSL2 Bonding. Alcatel-Lucent will also supply Bonding-ready customer premises equipment (CPE). VDSL2 Bonding is an ideal approach: service providers like PTCL can almost double the speeds supported by their DSL infrastructure or expand their network’s reach.

The Iconic Pakistani comedian/actor Moin Akhtar passed away

He was unquestionably the most excellent comedian par brilliance, except his last precede left the whole nation in tears. Iconic comedian and truly an overwhelming performer “Moin Akhtar” died of a heart attack on Friday, 22nd of April, 2010.

This writer still remembers as a child listening to an audiocassette, which sold like hot cakes in the ’70s, in which Moin Akhtar presented a series of impersonations and sound-effects, along with a humorous sketch of a villager who tries to copy an urbanite and in the process behaves like a nincompoop.

The fame was soon followed by critical acclaim when Moin Akhtar joined hands with humourist Anwar Maqsood and did a host of shows with him.

Beginning with an episode of Angan Terha in which Moin Akhtar played the role of a poet looking for a place to live, the duo came up with one gem after another.

The combination resulted in classics like Studio 2½ and Studio Poney Teen in which Moin Akhtar did the part of one of the interviewees and Anwar Maqsood the interviewer.

Akhtar’s zany but meaningful answers to Anwar Maqsood’s ostensibly innocuous questions created a magic the kind of which was never witnessed on Pakistani television. Comedienne Bushra Ansari also became part of their group and they did some memorable shows together.

Moin Akhtar didn’t confine his talent to comedy acts. He proved his versatility by playing the protagonist in a long-play Rozy written by Imran Aslam and directed by Sahira Kazmi.

Moin Akhtar did the part of a man who assumes the garb of a woman in order to find employment. His performance was not only appreciated in Pakistan but even across the border it earned him a great many fans. Rozy was an adaptation of a successful Hollywood film Tootsie.

On his inevitable comparison with Tootsie’s star Dustin Hoffman, Moin Akhtar often claimed that he never saw the film until after he’d done the play.

The late actor’s another outstanding performance was witnessed in a play Half Plate, written by Anwar Maqsood and directed by Mohsin Ali.

He portrayed the personality of a self-obsessed poet who had a past (and a nagging wife) that he seldom liked to remember. The acting was right out of the top drawer and intelligently complemented the script.

Moin Akhtar and Anwar Maqsood’s duo had become so inseparable that even after the advent of satellite TV they were asked by different channels to work together.

Their last show as the writer-actor combo was Loose Talk which ran for many years and Moin Akhtar assumed hundreds of characters in it.

These days a drama serial featuring Moin Akhtar as the main character is on air on a local private channel.

Apart from a worthy body of work on television, Moin Akhtar acted in a few films, including Tum Sa Nahin Dekha and Mr Tabedar. His theatre performances alongside Umar Sharif in stage dramas like Buddha Ghar Pe Hai were also a commercial success.

In recognition of his talent and work the government had bestowed on Moin Akhtar the Sitara-i-Imtiaz and Pride of Performance award.

The actor’s namaz-i-janaza will be held on Saturday after Zohr at Masjid-i-Toheed in DHA Phase II, Malir Cantt.

Identical quadruplets’ first day start at a school

Linking the names on the register with the new faces in class is a bit of a headache for any teacher. So imagine the problems of looking after this foursome. Ellie, Georgina, Jessica and Holly Carles are identical quadruplets, and they have just started school. From their height and weight through to their golden corkscrew curls,
the four-year-olds cannot be told apart. Which is why, as they entered the primary school reception class this week, their initials had been written on their shirt collars.
Their mother Julie, 42, was only the 27th woman in the world to conceive identical quads naturally, at odds of 64million to one.
Mrs Carles, a housing valuations manager who lives near Biggleswade, Bedfordshire, said her daughters were 'very excited' to be starting school and there were no tears at the gate. The girls all came from one embryo which split into four, and are monochorionic, which means they shared the same placenta.
Because of this, Holly and Jessica received less nutrition in the womb than Georgina and Ellie, meaning they had lower birth weights.
The girls' favourite games involve dressing up, computers and digging in the garden of their four-bedroomed home. They are also still at the stage where they insist on being dressed the same.
'If one tries to be different the others will follow so they will all end up the same again,' said Mrs Carles.
She herself has little problem telling her daughters apart. 'From very early on I started noticing small differences between them,' she said.
'They all have their own distinctive personalities too.' Husband Jose, 37, a landscaping products manager, said he was 'immensely proud' of his girls.
'It's amazing how fast the time has gone. I think when they turn 13 I'll either have to move home or build my own bathroom.'

Think Are your kids - children getting enough exercise? upakistan

Even though we're all aware of the health benefits of exercise, over 50 percent of adults still don't get enough exercise. Just like with our nutrition, the exercise habits we create when we’re young are usually carried over into our adult life. So get your kids moving now to keep them healthy well into future.
Scary Stats

There are some disturbing trends that are forming among children and teens in terms of the level of physical activity they're getting. Overall kids aged from two to 19 years of age aren't getting nearly enough exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. According to the Medical Research 17 percent children between the ages of one and nine years are overweight.
The combination of eating too much food or the wrong types of food and lack of physical activity are the leading causes of childhood obesity.
Get them active
Children are going to be influenced by the adults around them. That's why it's so important that you set a good example. If you aren't getting enough exercise it will be hard to explain to a child why they need to keep up their physical activity. Start making changes in your own workout regimen and not only will you improve the chances of your child getting active to stay healthy, but you as well will feel the health benefits.

1. Exercise together:
A perfect way to implement this is to plan physical activities that you and your child can do together. Not only will this give you quality time together but it will give you both a chance to get your heart pumping. It may be easier to stick with it if there's someone else to hold you accountable and enjoy the activity with.

2. Kid-friendly exercise:
Exercise for kids doesn't have to feel like exercise. By choosing activities that are fun, getting your child moving won't be as much of a struggle and the duration of activity will likely last longer. Also try to incorporate activities that are new. This will keep your kid mentally involved as they learn something new and broaden their perspective on what can consider exercise.

3. Reduce sedentary activities:
Sedentary activities are those that require very little exertion and aren’t considered exercise. Things like watching television and playing video games fall into this category. So to improve your child's chances of getting the daily physical activity they need you must reduce these activities. The easiest way to do so is to eliminate or limit the temptation by not having these electronics around or easily accessible.
Definitely avoid putting a television in your child's room. Also set limits on the amount of time your child is allowed to take part in these sedentary activities. It might be tough on the child at first but in the long run they'll be able to cope with a better balance in their activities.

Exercise for different ages

Exercise for two- to three-year-oldsAt this age toddlers are developing their motor skills, such as running and throwing. Children at this age have energy to spare for physical activity, so they can benefit from up to one and a half hours of daily exercise. A good exercise plan is to allow them 60 minutes of unstructured activity that is something they're conducting as well as 30 minutes of structured exercise time.
Recommended exercises for this age group include traditional games like tag and leap frog as well as activities that include age appropriate toys.

Exercise for four- to five-year-olds

By the time your child is four they have developed their motor skills enough to control the basics. At this stage they are continuing to improve balance and increasing their physical skill set.
At this age focus on activities that help them work on their balance and hand-eye coordination like catch or gymnastics. Depending on your child's physical abilities and comfort level more involved exercises like learning to swim or ride a bike is also an option. Also, nutrition for your child at this age is important, so to assist parents in giving their children the nutrients they need to ensure that they grow healthy and strong.

Exercise for ages six to 12

From age six to 12 it's important to start really laying the groundwork for healthy exercise habits. This is the time when kids can really start becoming more involved with the decisions they make with regards to exercise. This is also when many children start participating in organised sports.
From six to 12 years old 60 minutes of exercise a day is the required minimum. This is when you can help your child really develop a fitness routine with team sports that meet a few times a week as well as activities they can do regularly at home.

Exercise for ages 13 to 18
This could possibly be the most vital time for your child to keep up daily physical activity. As kids get older the amount of exercise they get drops, starting at age 13 for girls and 15 for boys. In addition to health benefits, such as weight management, physical activity can increase self-esteem and a positive self image among this age group which is also very important.

Salman Khan spots another beauty pictures

Salman Khan has an eye for spotting beauty and promoting it in films. Katrina Kaif and Sonakshi Sinha have been the beneficiaries of Salman’s large-heartedness, and now we hear a British model named Hazel has caught the super star’s attention. Salman met Hazel on the sets of brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri’s film Bodyguard, starring Kareena Kapoor in the lead role. Hazel - not the one from Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar - plays one of Kareena’s college friends and will be seen in campus scenes in the movie.

Salman is often seen chatting with Hazel on the set, and he is giving her a lot of tips on how to handle her career. The word from the shooting sets is that Salman has been going out of his way to help Hazel get her lines and expressions right before the camera. Not just that, Salman even personally took pains to teach Hazel how to ride a bike.

Yes, the Brit model took the handle and Salman sat pillion even though she rammed the bike into a wall. The bottom-line is that Hazel and Salman are bonding well on the sets. If Hazel continues to remain in Sallu bhai’s good books, she can be sure of regular recommendations to Bollywood producers.

CDGK sets milk price at Rs 60 per litre

KARACHI: The City District Government Karachi (CDGK) on Monday fixed the retail price of milk at Rs 60 per litre in a meeting chaired by Administrator Karachi Fazlur Rehman.

Representatives of milkmen, who were also present on the occasion, demanded increase of Rs 20, saying that the cost of milk had been increased due to recent hike in petroleum prices. Representatives of the civil society and consumers, however, opposed them.

Consumer Forum’s Chairperson Huma Bokhari said that milk prices in Karachi have been increased about 300 percent in the last five years, which was quite unfair.

Citizens Rights Committee chief Ahmed Chinoy said that the citizens of Karachi had been feeling that the government was not taking action against the hike in milk and related items’ prices. Retailers were allowed to get a profit of Rs 10 to Rs 20 per litre, which was utterly unjust, he added.

Administrator Karachi said that the increase in milk prices, made in December 2010, was for one year and now after just three months demand for a further increase was not justified; however, he said that due to the raise in petrol prices, an increase of one rupee per litre had been approved.

Rehman said that the retailers and wholesalers must abide by the price set by the CDGK. He said that the milk production cost calculated by dairy farmers was not accurate. Therefore, it was not possible to increase milk prices more than one rupee per litre.

Load shedding menacing Karachiites as mercury rises - Daily time

Karachi: Prolonged load shedding in Karachi has created immense problems for citizens as temperature rises. Almost eight to nine hours a day load shedding in many parts of Karachi is the beginning of nightmare awaiting Karachiites in the longer summer months to come.

Students preparing for matriculation examination are having a terrible time, as they could not concentrate on their studies in hot days without electricity. Housewives also face immense problems as after every couple of hours there is a load shedding spell of almost same duration. People working in small trades also lose earnings as their machines stop working as the electricity goes off. Citizens are perplexed why they are not being supplied smooth electricity when they are paying their huge bills, as electricity tariff rises after regular intervals.

They also raise the question, why they should pay such a heavy bills, when they houses and businesses are without electricity for eight to nine hours every day. The government should look into the matter with a realistic approach, and besides seeing financial and economic aspects of this issue also try to see that it is also a serious human issue, concerning the basic rights of citizens. Utilities like water and electricity are declared as right to life in many landmark court decisions. Citizens feel it is high time to revisit the decision of privatization of the KESC, and correct wrongdoing where necessary in the larger interests of citizens and country, as the national economy directly depends of the economy of Karachi. Without electricity the economy of Karachi would soon crumble and so would the national economy.

On the other hand, doctors have advised parents to remain extra careful in sending their children outdoors as the scorching heat and direct exposure to sun rays can be harmful.

SSC Part-II papers may be delayed as FBISE staff goes on strike

The Secondary School Certificate (SSC) Part-II Annual Examinations 2011 may be delayed because of complete strike being observed by employees of the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) against the alleged financial embezzlement in the board’s funds.

Employees of the FBISE came out of the building and locked it from outside demanding of FBISE Chairperson Shaheen Khan to stop financial embezzlement that has allegedly been done while transferring the official bank account of the board. They were of the view that the FBISE director general has transferred the board’s bank account to the Silk Bank and the Atlas Bank from the National Bank and Habib Bank Limited (HBL) for her vested interests.

It has been learnt that the HBL was distributing examination papers to various destinations free of cost but now when the funds have been transferred to other banks, HBL has refused to distribute papers this time around. “The examinations for class 10th are just round the corner and the HBL has refused to distribute papers,” said an FBISE official.

The protesting employees of the FBISE alleged that the husband of FBISE Chairperson Shaheen Khan was involved in the financial embezzlement. According to information, an amount of Rs1.2 billion has been transferred to commercial banks. “What exactly was the point to transfer funds to other commercial banks when a branch of the HBL exists in the FBISE?” asked an official.

The protesters also demanded immediate removal of Secretary Mudassar ul Hassan who has been reappointed after his retirement. They believed that corruption has increased manifold since Mudassar ul Hassan has taken the charge. “He is the right hand of the chairperson as he supports and facilitates her in all wrongdoings,” said an official.

The protesters also demanded of the director general to vacate the FBISE guesthouse. “She is living in the guesthouse despite having a house on self-hiring in Sector F-10,” an employee told ‘The News’.

He said that either the chairperson should vacate the guesthouse or the house, which has been approved for self-hiring. “She has been living there since her joining the FBISE which is not fair. It is not for the first time we have demanded her to vacate the FBISE guesthouse,” said another FBISE employee.

Talking to ‘The News,’ FBISE Chairperson Shaheen Khan said that demands of the employees have been accepted and they would be announced on Saturday. When inquired about the transfer of funds, she said that they have accepted the demand of employees and reversed the process of funds transfer. “The situation will be normalised by tomorrow,” she said optimistically.
